How It All Began

The Grassfield Cheer Flip-A-Thon originated in the Spring of 2014 to honor and support Megan Curry, a member of the Grassfield varsity cheerleading Team.  On March 13, 2014, Megan underwent a stem cell transplant at Duke University Medical Center.  On the day of her transplant, she expressed to Coach Harrell a strong desire to create an event to help others when she was well again.  Coach Harrell and the Grassfield cheerleaders decided to this on Megan's behalf.  On May 13, 2014, the Grizzlies held their first Flip-A-Thon to raise money to donate to Ronald McDonald House of Durham, where their teammate recovered post-transplant.  The Flip-A-Thon was an overwhelming success! Not only did the girls and coaches complete a total of 3,658 flips in one hour, they raised a grand total of $10,000.  In June 2014, the Grassfield cheerleaders traveled to Durham to present the $10,000 check to the Ronald McDonald House in their teammates name.  While there, the team toured the facility and learned the history of the RMHC as well as the impact of their donation.  It was at that time the girls decided they would make this an annual event and flip for local charities: as they put it....kids helping kids!

Our Mission

Unfortunately, Megan lost her battle with the rare blood disorder and passed away June 21, 2015.  The Grassfield Cheerleaders vowed to honor Megan's memory and continue her wish to help other sick children and their families.  Griz cheer will continue to support the Ronald McDonald House of Durham, who so lovingly cared for Megan.  They will also donate to local charity, The Childrens' Hospital of the Kings Daughters.

I have met several kids that have been waiting years for procedures their families couldn’t afford and that’s just not right. I really want to do something to help families in need!
— Megan Curry, Grassfield Cheerleader
